Understanding The Procedure

Understanding ERCP: Purpose and Process

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography is a specialized procedure combining endoscopy with X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat pancreatic duct and bile duct conditions. Under Dr. Omer's care, candidacy assessment ensures the procedure is appropriate for your symptoms and medical history. Patients benefit from advanced visualization and therapeutic intervention in a single session.

In Simple Terms

During ERCP, a thin, flexible scope is passed through your mouth and stomach to reach the bile and pancreatic ducts. Dr. Omer visualizes the ducts on a screen, takes images if needed, and performs treatments like gallstone removal or clearing blockages. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes under gentle sedation.

Why It Is Done

ERCP is recommended for jaundice, unexplained abdominal pain, bile duct obstruction, pancreatic duct problems, or suspected gallstones. It helps diagnose conditions causing digestive symptoms and treats blockages, infections, or strictures. Therapeutic ERCP often prevents the need for surgery by addressing the root cause directly.

Who Needs It

ERCP candidates typically include adults with confirmed or suspected bile duct or pancreatic duct disorders. People with jaundice, cholangitis, pancreatitis, or known gallstones in the ducts are frequent candidates. Dr. Omer will assess your age, overall health, and medical history during consultation to confirm suitability.

What To Know

You must fast for 6 to 8 hours before ERCP. Certain blood-thinning medications may need temporary adjustment. Sedation is standard, so arrange transport home. Expect mild throat discomfort and possible bloating afterward. Recovery is typically same-day, with most patients resuming normal eating within hours.

Is ERCP a Big Surgery?

No. ERCP is not open surgery. A thin endoscope reaches the opening of the bile duct through the mouth, so there are no cuts. It removes most bile duct stones. Very large stones may need more than one session.

ERCP clears stones from the bile duct. Stones still inside the gallbladder usually need gallbladder surgery (see gallstones treatment).

Step by Step

Your ERCP Journey: Step-by-Step Guide

Your ERCP experience begins with pre-procedure assessment and ends with detailed results review and follow-up care.

1
Arrival and Assessment

Upon arrival at the clinic, staff will confirm your fasting compliance, review medical history, and conduct vital sign checks. Dr. Omer will briefly discuss the procedure, address final questions, and obtain your informed consent before proceeding with your ERCP.

2
Sedation and Positioning

An anesthetist will administer gentle intravenous sedation to ensure your comfort and relaxation during ERCP. You will be positioned on your left side, and a local anesthetic spray will be applied to your throat to prevent discomfort as the endoscope is gently introduced.

3
The ERCP Procedure

Dr. Omer carefully advances the endoscope through your mouth, esophagus, and stomach to reach the bile and pancreatic ducts. Using live X-ray guidance, he visualizes the ductal system, identifies any blockages or stones, and performs therapeutic interventions such as gallstone removal or stent placement if required.

4
Findings and Documentation

As the procedure concludes, Dr. Omer documents all findings with images and notes. Before you wake, he reviews visual results with the anesthesia team and begins compiling your comprehensive report. You will receive a detailed summary of what was found and treated.

5
Recovery and Discharge

In the recovery area, nursing staff monitor your vital signs as sedation wears off, usually within 30 to 45 minutes. Dr. Omer meets with you to review results, discuss next steps, and provide written discharge instructions. Most patients go home the same day with clear guidance on diet and activity.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Omer assesses your suitability through clinical evaluation, imaging review, and discussion of your symptoms and medical history. Most patients with jaundice, known gallstones in ducts, or bile duct obstruction are good candidates. A consultation will confirm whether ERCP is the right approach for your specific digestive condition.

ERCP is a safe, well-established procedure when performed by an experienced specialist like Dr. Omer. Risks include rare complications like pancreatitis or perforation, which are minimized through careful technique and patient selection. Dr. Omer uses modern equipment and strict safety protocols to ensure optimal outcomes.

Most patients recover within 24 to 48 hours, with sedation wearing off within hours of the procedure. Some experience mild throat discomfort or bloating, which resolve quickly. Healing of treated ducts varies based on what was done, but you can usually resume light activities the following day.

Fast for 6 to 8 hours before your procedure and inform Dr. Omer of all medications, especially blood thinners. Most daily medications can continue, but some may need temporary adjustment. Arrange transport home because sedation affects alertness. Wear comfortable, loose clothing for easy access to your arm for IV placement.

No. ERCP is an endoscopic procedure done through the mouth under sedation, with no cuts or stitches. Most patients go home the same day or after a short observation. Like any procedure it has some risks, mainly pancreatitis, which Dr. Omer explains before the test.

ERCP removes stones from the bile duct, and most can be cleared in one session. It does not remove stones that are still inside the gallbladder. If you have gallbladder stones as well, gallbladder removal surgery is usually advised to prevent new stones slipping into the duct. Dr. Omer explains the findings straight after the procedure.
