Endoscopy Test (Gastroscopy) in Islamabad
A safe, short camera test of the food pipe, stomach and duodenum, performed by Dr. Omer Hassaan Aftab at Omer Diagnostics, G-8 Markaz – to find the cause of acidity, pain, bleeding or swallowing problems.
Your Endoscopy, Performed by a Specialist
Upper GI endoscopy is done personally by a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist, not delegated.
Over 13 years of experience in gastroenterology, hepatology and therapeutic endoscopy.
Dr. Omer reviews your symptoms and reports before the test, explains why endoscopy is needed and what it can show, and answers your questions so you know exactly what to expect.
After the procedure he explains the findings in plain language the same day. If biopsies are taken, he discusses the results with you when they are ready and sets out a clear treatment plan.
What Is Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)?
Endoscopy – also called gastroscopy or upper GI endoscopy – lets the doctor look directly inside the upper digestive tract.
A thin, flexible tube with a small camera is passed gently through the mouth into the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). The live image on the screen shows the lining in detail.
It is commonly advised for persistent acidity or heartburn, upper-abdominal pain, difficulty or pain while swallowing, vomiting blood or black stools, unexplained weight loss or anaemia, and suspected ulcers.
During the same test small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken painlessly – for example to check for H. pylori, celiac disease or abnormal cells – and some problems such as bleeding can be treated at the same time.
The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes. Most patients receive a throat spray and, if needed, light sedation, so it is far more comfortable than most people expect.

How the Procedure Works
A simple, step-by-step process from preparation to results.
Do not eat for about 6–8 hours before the test (small sips of water are usually allowed until a few hours before). Tell the doctor about blood thinners, diabetes medicines and allergies.
Your throat is numbed with a spray and light sedation can be given if needed. You lie on your left side and a small mouth guard protects your teeth.
The endoscope is passed gently and the food pipe, stomach and duodenum are examined carefully. Air is used to open the stomach so the lining can be seen clearly.
Small biopsies can be taken painlessly, and problems such as bleeding points or varices can be treated during the same procedure.
You rest briefly until the sedation wears off. Dr. Omer explains the findings the same day; biopsy results follow later. If sedated, arrange someone to drive you home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most people feel only mild discomfort or pressure. A throat spray numbs the throat and light sedation can be given, so many patients remember very little of the test.
The test itself usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. If you have sedation, you rest at the clinic until you are fully awake and should not drive for the rest of the day. Most people go back to work and normal meals the next day.
Stop eating 6–8 hours before the test. Bring your previous reports and a list of medicines, and tell the doctor if you take blood thinners or diabetes medication. If you will be sedated, bring someone to take you home.
It can find inflammation (oesophagitis, gastritis), ulcers, H. pylori-related changes, celiac disease, varices, narrowing of the food pipe, polyps and early cancers, and it identifies the source of upper GI bleeding.
Diagnostic endoscopy is a very safe and routine procedure. Serious complications such as bleeding or perforation are rare and are more likely when treatments are performed; your doctor will discuss any specific risks with you beforehand.
Dr. Omer explains what was seen straight after the procedure. If biopsies are taken, those results usually take a few days, after which a follow-up visit is arranged to discuss them and plan treatment.
